xVoYvUv. This Fear the Walking Dead review contains spoilers. Fear the Walking Dead Season 7 Episode 5 Sitting down to write this review of “Till Death,” I was surprised that the word count for just my notes was a whopping 1,400 words. While I tend to take very extensive notes for each episode, what sets “Till Death” apart is that much of my notes is devoted to ranting. Much of my frustration as both reviewer and fan stems from my disappointment with this season’s aimlessness. Why should viewers care about solving a 40-year-old murder case, or Sarah’s sudden interest in finding Wendell? Those both felt like filler episodes to me, and “Till Death” likewise does little to advance the overall story. Austin Amelio and Christine Evangelista give this week’s tepid, nonsensical script their all, but even so, why should we care about the Dark Horses and their code? Does it really matter that Dwight and Sherry have become “peace officers of a modern frontier?” Fear the Walking Dead already explored the pitfalls of being Good Samaritans—to deleterious effect—in previous seasons. Why revisit this theme when it proved so disastrous the first time? Sure, the Dark Horses’ cause is a noble one, but here, now, it just falls flat. And the idea that their reputation already precedes them a scant two months after taking up the Dark Horses mantle? I’m sorry, but I found that a bit laughable. But it’s not until Dwight and Sherry are forcibly brought before Strand that “Till Death” completely divorces itself from logic. You see, while Strand has heard tell of the Dark Horses, he had no idea it was Dwight and Sherry behind these exploits. It’s interesting that he finds this surprise reunion so amusing—because, really, the world that these characters inhabit is way too small. So, sure, why not laugh at how contrived all of this feels? As for why Strand has summoned them—this is likewise laughable. Why would he seek the aid of “ethical outlaws” to find a missing person? That’s not what the Dark Horses are known for—at all. No, what Strand needs is a tracker, or even a bounty hunter, like Josiah—someone who knows how to find people that don’t want to be found. I’m sorry, but just because Dwight and Sherry found each other doesn’t qualify them for this task. If it did, Strand would have sought them out, and not the Dark Horses. And yet, despite all of this, and with almost no information to go on, Dwight and Sherry easily track down the wayward Mickey Aisha Tyler. It’s hard to tell how long this takes—is it a matter of hours? A few days? And how is it that they found such quick success, whereas Strand’s people kept coming back empty-handed—if they came back at all? These are rhetorical questions, though, since Fear’s writers don’t seem to care about the logic or lack thereof behind any of this. As to why Strand is so keen to find Mickey in the first place? This is likewise devoid of logic. Certainly it’s not because he’s concerned for her welfare. Rather, he’s angry that she devised a way to escape and doesn’t want word getting out about how she did it. But, so what? This information would only be useful to anyone still inside the tower, and she has no desire to go back there anyway. So, really, Strand’s motivation for finding her makes zero sense. If she’s brought back to the tower, wouldn’t that make it that much easier to share her means of escape? It’s phone books, by the way. The secret is…phone books. There’s been a bit of friction up to this point between our beloved Dark Horses, though. Is Strand’s community right for them, and for the Larsons, whose storm cellar they’ve been sharing since the bombs fell? And does Mickey really know what’s best for her? So, yes, when it comes to helping Mickey, flip-flopping ensues despite their code—or maybe in spite of it. Would Sherry really choose a stranger over Dwight? Yes, apparently, since the two go their separate ways. This happened last season too, if you’ll recall, only for them to reunite a few episodes later. As it turns out, the journey to the gym the Grapple Chapel! is hardly treacherous, so what was Mickey waiting for this entire time? How long does it take to construct armor out of phone books and duct tape? What bothers me more, though, is that Sherry brings back the use of zombie guts as camouflage. If this is a known trick, then why not do this all the time—like Nick used to do? Mickey soon discovers that Cliff is undead and before long she and Sherry are cornered by a horde of walkers. Luckily for them, and before they can radio Strand for help, Dwight has somehow tracked them down, and in the nick of time, no less. What follows is a bizarre montage of zombie-killing set to Damian Marley’s “Welcome to Jamrock.” For me, this does not work at all. Nor does seeing Mickey put her pro-wrestling skills to use against the horde—not when guns are suddenly in abundant supply. Join our mailing listGet the best of Den of Geek delivered right to your inbox! By episode’s end, the Dark Horses are not only reunited, they’re now joined by Mickey. Their first mission together turns out to be a ruse, though. In actuality, a mysterious group needs their help locating Padre. To me, Padre feels like a retread of the Terminus storyline from The Walking Dead. And even if Padre turns out to be the promised land so many survivors believe it to be, certainly experience has taught us that any safe haven in the Walking Dead universe is really a hell just waiting to burn. LAST WEEK’S REVIEW The Walking Dead’ Review Service’ Proves The Power of the Saviors Whose Episode Is It? “Go Getters” is set at the Hilltop, and serves to establish the regular cast whenever we check in there again. Maggie and Sasha have arrived safely, plus there’s Jesus and the Hilltop’s slimy leader, Gregory. Maggie, still mourning for Glenn, seeks to find new purpose, and Sasha is determined to help her. Sasha, having worked through her own significant grief issues in seasons past, knows that Maggie is going through. Meanwhile, Jesus knows that Gregory is a terrible leader, but can’t quite find it in himself to depose him. Enid also wishes to join the Hilltop to be with Maggie, and Carl accompanies her on her journey for his own purposes. While “Go Getters” offers several familiar sights yes, we get our third Savior collection over the past four episodes, strong acting and solid character arcs make it one of the better episodes of Season 7 so far. A Shred of Humanity Maggie finally gets some good news from Hilltop’s doctor she and her baby should be okay as long as she takes it easy and gets some rest. The doctor does insist that Maggie remain at Hilltop, though, so he’ll be nearby in case anything else goes wrong. Maggie and Sasha are both amenable to the idea, but Gregory is insistent they leave immediately. His not-unreasonable point is that if the Saviors see either of them there, they’ll figure out that Hilltop and Alexandria colluded against them, and Hilltop will get their share of punishment. Fortunately, Maggie and Sasha have an advocate in Jesus, who is willing to stand up to Gregory on their behalf. Jesus knows that Gregory is a lousy leader and he’s unwilling to take the mantle on himself, but after seeing Maggie bark orders and take care of business during a late-night prank by the Saviors where they let a bunch of zombies into Hilltop, he decides she’s the woman for the job. There are apparently no actual residents who are qualified to lead Hilltop, because it’s yet another of “Walking Dead’s” patented communities that consist of two or three prominent characters plus the occasional background extra. Still, Maggie’s evolution into a leader is one of “Walking Dead’s” genuinely good slow-burning storylines, and it’s nice to see some progress on it here. Lauren Cohan does some fine work this episode, as Maggie proves herself capable while still mourning Glenn. And her acceptance of Glenn’s death by the end of the episode was a welcome relief for those of us who were concerned about another Sasha-level depression spiral. Back in Alexandria, Enid decides she needs to be with Maggie, and takes off for Hilltop on foot. You’ll recall that Carl locked Enid in the armory when everyone else took off to get captured by Negan. Carl follows her, as he tends to do, although this time his reasons are his own. As the two head to Hilltop on foot Carl had a car, but he crashed it, because Carl, they miraculously find two pair of roller skates by the side of the road. Cut to the two of them joyfully skating down the street, holding hands and laughing. It’s a nice moment that’s not marred by sudden, merciless tragedy, and we should take those where we can on this show. Gene Page/AMC Man Is The True Monster One of the big plusses for this episode is that we get more of Xander Berkley’s delightfully slimy Gregory. While “The Walking Dead” has gone to great lengths to show the worst of humanity, it hasn’t had much room for lickspittles. Enter Gregory, who’s not just a sniveling coward, but also a condescending dick who doesn’t bother remembering anyone’s names including his own people’s. When the Saviors arrive, Gregory is perfectly willing to sell Maggie and Sasha out, but is thwarted by some quick thinking by Jesus. When Gregory tries to kick them out, Jesus threatens to make his deal with Alexandria public, which would put his leadership in jeopardy. He’ll remain as leader, but he can’t get rid of the Alexandrians. Oh, and Maggie slugs him one for good measure. Speaking of the Saviors, yes, we get another scene of gun-toting thugs taking people’s stuff. But this one is a cut above the others, mostly due to the performance of Steven Ogg as Simon, Negan’s lieutenant and the Hilltop’s new Savior liaison. Simon’s approach is much like Negan’s, as he uses a mask of joviality to cover up a constant threat of violence, but Ogg is charismatic enough so that it doesn’t feel nearly as played out as it should. There’s also the added intrigue of whether the Saviors have pieced together Gregory’s role in the murders of their friends. Simon certainly seems suspicious, but doesn’t push Gregory too hard of course, Gregory folds anyway, because he sucks. If we’re going to get the same type of scene week after week, there should at least be variations like this. Carl, meanwhile, has accompanied Enid to Hilltop not out of a desire to be with her and protect her, but to hopefully encounter Negan so he can kill him. Enid tries to talk him out of it with the power of teen kisses, but Carl’s determined to get sweet revenge, and winds up hiding out in a truck bound for Negan. Jesus hops aboard the same truck, because Sasha has asked him to find Negan’s hideout. There’s an unlikely team-up for you. The Remains I didn’t mention it in last week’s review, but Father Gabriel convinced Negan that Maggie was dead, which will make things awkward if she winds up taking control of Hilltop. Sasha mentions that all Abraham had on him was a cigar, and by the end of the episode she’s grimly chomping down on it as she sharpens her knife. Gregory’s right in one thing it would be a waste to leave Glenn’s watch on his grave. Fortunately, Maggie agrees with him and gives it to Enid, instead. When Gregory offers Simon an expensive bottle of Scotch, Simon says he’ll take it to Negan himself. “I’m gonna say it’s from me and not mention you. I really want the headline on this one.” More Simon, please. Grade B Stay on top of the latest TV news! Sign up for our TV email newsletter here. The Walking Dead Season 7 gave Lucille the spotlight in a Super Bowl 51 TV spot, which gave us flashbacks to the loss of Glenn and Abraham. That said, it wouldn’t be The Walking Dead without a few epic death scenes. It’ll be tough to watch, but here are some deaths we wouldn’t mind seeing in second half of The Walking Dead Season 7.[WARNING The Walking Dead comic book spoilers ahead.]RositaWe understand Rosita is distraught over Abraham’s death. We understand that she never had the chance to get over him after he dumped her for Sasha. But c’mon Rosita! Never has anyone from Rick’s group been so sloppy. She missed her one shot to kill Negan, which exposed the group’s secret weapon Eugene. Negan has every single advantage over Rick, and Rosita is to blame. In the comics, Rosita dies shortly after the All Out War storyline. She’s decapitated by Alpha, the leader of the Whisperers. We wouldn’t mind if they moved that scene up. Rosita has to go. CarolCarol has gone through enough in The Walking Dead . She’s lost her daughter, witnessed the deaths of some of her closest friends and has been forced to kill people in order to survive. Once she arrived to Alexandria you could see the survivor's guilt start to weigh heavily on her. She doesn’t want to fight, but she can’t seem to leave the immediate area. She’s battling the urge to protect the people she cares about. Carol deserves peace. If death is the only way she can get peace, we’re ok with that. You’ve done enough, Carol. Let Rick fight this on his one is difficult for us. We don’t want to put Sasha on the list as she’s become a key part of Maggie’s support system. We also grew to love Sasha because she was always real. She went through the deep depression after losing her boyfriend Bob and brother Tyrese shortly after. She’s handling the loss of her boyfriend Abraham pretty well, all things considered. However, we feel like her time on the show is coming to an end. In the comics, Abraham’s girlfriend Holly Sasha in the show is kidnapped by Negan. He returns Holly to Alexandria - in walker form - which leads to a gunfight. Sasha might be the first casualty of the All Out War The Walking Dead comics, it feels like the story is geared towards the dynamic between Rick and Carl. However, the TV series definitely feels like it's all about Rick. We know Carl’s death is highly unlikely since it would send Rick spiraling in a dark path, but we’re OK with seeing him go. Carl doesn’t really add much to the show right now. It doesn’t go much deeper than becomes an important turncoat in the All Out War storyline in the comics, but he’s pretty annoying on the show. Obviously, a big reason why we want him gone is because he’s so nasty to Daryl. Dwight seems to have enjoyed seeing Daryl hit rock bottom, which doesn’t make sense because the guy try to help him escape Negan in the forest. Dwight could’ve had a different life had he gone with Daryl to Alexandria. Now, Dwight is just a Bitter Becky wanting Daryl to stoop down to his level. Daryl is too strong to go to the darkside, Dwight. Nice try, though. We don’t care if you survive. Just give Daryl his stuff characters do you think will die in the second half of The Walking Dead Season 7? Share your theories in the comments below.
